During the course of the last few months, after Google put more weight in the Google Places listings, geo-targeted or local SEO has emerged as one of the important search engine optimization tasks. Small business that caters to a focused geo-targeted market have been busy in getting their websites optimized, to be in what people call “the seven pack”. But how can somebody get a website listed in the 1st seven results pulled out from Google Places?

There are things you can do to optimize your site for local search. And most of all, there are handy tools to make local search optimization easier. First, let’s get down with some steps on how to get “prospects” for local citations and listings using one of the most common tools, Google. Avery useful feature to use would be the “discussion” tab. As you can see in the image below, you can get opportunities for links, citations and listings by doing a local search and switching to the discussion tab.

Another great tool to find citations is Whitespark, a local citation search finder. The tools user interface is very intuitive, and thus very easy to use. Please see the screen shots below:

After clicking search, the results will then be generated and sent to you through e-mail. For FREE. If you want quicker results though, you should get a premium account.

There are also good references on how to do local SEO such as the following:

Google’s Algorithm change that occurred on “May Day” had webmasters all over the internet in turmoil due to massive drops in rankings and complete chaos in the search engine. There was a couple of things that changed on this day, but one of the most crucial changes was the amount of weight that Google put on exact match domain names in regards to their ranking system. Many webmasters that had a lot of exact match domain names completely lost rankings to many of their sites that day, and one thing was for sure: The days where you could just throw up websites with exact match domain names and virtually no back-links and expect them to rank were over. Google wants you to have a solid foundation of back-links, and they want you to have a diverse set of them.

Different Types of Back-links

There are all sorts of back-links that you can get and diversifying the type you target will mean better rankings in Google. Google views a website with only one or two different types of back-links as being somewhat spammy, and this is what you want to avoid. Different types of back-links that you can get include but are not limited to:

Natural Links

Guest Posting Links

Paid Directories

Free Directories

Forum profiles and postings

Blog Dofollow comments

Blog Nofollow comments

Article Directory Submissions

When doing your back-linking strategy, you should remember to keep all types of these back-links into your game plan. Google likes websites that have back-links that appear to be natural, so if you’re sticking to only a few types of back-links then Google will automatically recognize that something is fishy and your site will not rank as well as it should.

You should aim for DoFollow links as well as NoFollow links. A good lump of NoFollow links are important. Once again you are trying to appear very natural and a good website out there will definitely build some NoFollow links naturally. Google knows this, and although the link won’t give you any “link juice” it will create relevancy and as the days go by Google is putting more and more weight on Relevancy. Free links directories and NoFollow blog comments are good ways to build relevancy and NoFollow links. Try searching on Google Blogs for the most updated blogs related to your topic and then make good relevant comments on the blogs that you find. Hiring professionals that specialize in backlink services would also be a good idea to get your campaign going quickly.

Networking is the most important part of link building. Networking with other websites and webmasters will open doors and opportunities that would not have happened otherwise. Guest posting and joining forums are two great ways to network with other websites and gain high quality back-links. It’s the best step you can take to start gaining natural links (that and building a great website), and gaining natural links is the best step you can take into getting huge numbers in terms of traffic for your web site.

Search engines are the most common way in which you search for the websites. Therefore, when a website is listed with a good search engine, you can see a large number of visitors for that particular website. To get your website noticed and visited, you get to know search engine optimization works.

Through search engine optimization, your websites are accessible to good search engines and are easily found when searched for.

4 Ways to optimize your web pages

1. Write good content for your page:

To increase traffic and ranking of your web pages, you should write some good content. The content helps to describe the page as well as get some really good visitors for your pages. Write good stuff which can easily attract people and give all the relevant information about the pages. Don’t worry about the length as people will readily scroll down for more if they find good content.

2. Give headings and sub-headings:

This is an important part of search engine optimization. You must give headings and sub-headings and put more stress on their heading size. The main heading should be a bit larger than the sub-heading. These all attributes will add to your larger number of visitors and also increase the popularity of your websites.

3. Give important links:

When you’re optimizing your web page, do remember to give links to the anchor texts or the main keywords of your web pages that may lead to another page. Rather giving links to “click here”, if you give links to the main keywords, this will help your web page to get better ranking.

4. Give meaningful titles:

When you’re optimizing, it’s important to give meaningful titles that best describe your web pages. Titles should be catchy and should be brief. The key content of the web pages should be easily understood in the title.

Try to avoid over decorating your websites and using frames as these are considered negative attributes when optimizing your page. The points above will help you to understand how search engine optimization is all about.
